Gable end or eave side — what's the difference for my door?

Accepted Answer

The gable end is the triangular wall under the roof peak; the eave side is the long wall under the sloping roofline. Doors on the gable end face the roof peak and read very cleanly from the street. Doors on the eave side are tucked under the roofline — a common look for wider garages. We place them where you actually drive, and the two styles look different enough that it's worth deciding early.

What size single-level garage do I need?

Start with the cars: one car fits comfortably in a 20×24 or smaller; two cars in 24×24 to 24×32; three-plus cars go wider from there. Then add room to open doors and walk around. We build every size custom, so we'll match the footprint to your cars, your lot, and how you plan to use the space.

Overhead doors or sliding doors?

Accepted Answer

Overhead doors are the standard on garages — they lift up and out of the way, easy in, easy out, and they're what nearly every garage we build gets. Sliding doors, which slide horizontally back and forth, are an option but they're far more common on barns than garages. If you're after a classic barn look or matching a specific style, we can talk through it. Most of the time, overhead doors are the right call.

Can I use a single-level garage for more than parking?

Absolutely. The interior is yours — a workbench and tool wall, shelves and storage, a shop vac and work lights, whatever fits. Pour the concrete floor smooth and it works for all of it. If you want climate control or a full workshop fit-out, that's your project to plan — we can walk you through the building side so you know what you're working with.

What size garage doors do you build?

The common modern size is 9 ft wide by 8 ft high. Through the '70s, '80s, and early '90s, 7-ft-high doors were the norm; since the early 2000s, 8-ft-high is standard because SUVs and trucks got larger. An 8-ft-high door is what we recommend as a minimum today — a 7-ft door is tight for a lot of modern vehicles.

Why do you need 2 ft of wall beside the door?

Accepted Answer

Because a garage door is a very large opening in a wall — that section has no plywood or stud bracing. Massachusetts building code requires a braced wall section beside each door so the wall stays rigid and doesn't flex over time. The working rule is a minimum of 2 ft of wall beside each door (a taller door needs a wider brace on at least one side). It's an invisible detail when it's done right — and it's part of why we build garages we expect to last 100 years.
